KAMAS, Summit County — A man missing since last week after he did not return to his campsite near Hidden Lake was found dead Tuesday afternoon, officials report.

The body of Ray Humpherys, 66, was located about 3 p.m. approximately 1.5 miles from where he was last seen, according to a news release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials don’t suspect foul play in Humpherys’ death and said his “injuries “are consistent with the harsh terrain and environment.”

Humpherys’ body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, officials said.

Humpherys went missing during the evening of Wednesday, July 18, during a camping trip in the Hidden Lake area in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Family members said he went to get water from the lake to put out a fire but never returned.

The Garrett Bardsley Foundation organized volunteer search parties over the weekend with Monday as the last day for volunteer efforts.

“(Summit County) Sheriff Justin Martinez and team express our most sincere condolences to the Humpherys Family,” the news release stated.
