BOUNTIFUL, Utah (AP) — Utah homeowners worried about dry conditions ripe for wildfires are increasingly turning to a rancher's team of goats. Greg Cover told the Salt Lake Tribune he hires out the animals to chew through grass and dense vegetation on hard-to-reach hillsides and difficult terrain. Cover says business is up this year, at the start of what is expected to be an intense wildfire season. Blazes have already destroyed dozens of structures and consumed more than 100 square miles around the state.

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (AP) — Police in Pleasant Grove say a man fatally shot his uncle who had been banging on the front door of the home of the nephew's father while holding a hammer in each hand. Police say the 28-year-old nephew shot his 50-year-old uncle with a pistol during an ensuing struggle in the doorway Friday and that the case is considered an open homicide investigation.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal authorities say a Mississippi man sought in the killing of his wife has been seen recently in southern Wyoming and northern Utah. The U.S. Marshals Service says 61-year-old Charles Eugene Bowman was seen June 30 at a gas station in Evanston, Wyoming, and Friday while camping six miles west of Vernal, Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City councilman Derek Kitchen, whose lawsuit overturned Utah's prohibition on same-sex marriage, edged closer to victory in his Democratic primary race in one of the state Senate's few liberal districts. Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen said updated vote results Friday showed Kitchen's lead had widened over physician Jennifer Plumb and could be insurmountable. Kitchen has 5.491 votes, or roughly 53 percent, compared to 4,940, or about 47 percent, for Plumb.
