ENOCH, Iron County — A California man died early Sunday morning after he had a heart attack while behind the wheel and crashed into a church.

A family of three from Yucaipa, California was traveling south on I-15 near milepost 65, just east of Enoch, about 7 a.m. Sunday, Utah Highway Patrol officials said on the agency’s website.

The father was driving a pickup truck hauling a fifth-wheel trailer. He suffered a heart attack and the truck went off the right side of the highway, UHP officials said.

The truck went through a highway fence and the trailer detached. The truck continued through the Valley Bible Church parking lot and then hit the side of the church building, UHP officials said.

The church property is just west of the highway. The man was pulled out of the pickup truck and he was given CPR and several shocks from a defibrillator, but he eventually was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

He died from his heart attack, not from the crash impact, according to UHP Sgt. Jacob Cox.

The man’s wife and daughter were also in the truck during the crash, but they were not injured. Cox said he did not think there were any people in the church during the crash. There was very minor damage to the truck, he added. Details were not released about damage to the church building.

Officials did not provide any other identifying information for the people involved in the crash.
