TATOOINE — You don’t have to travel to a galaxy far, far away to celebrate Star Wars Day this year.
May the Fourth — as in “May the fourth be with you” — is the official holiday honoring “Star Wars” and all the glorious nerdiness that comes with it. Fans of the sci-fi franchise across the galaxy will celebrate “Star Wars” on Friday by dressing as their favorite characters and attending events.
Be sure to brush up on your lightsaber-wielding skills before you attend one of these five Utah events celebrating Star Wars Day.
Urban Arts Gallery "Star Wars" Art Show and Cosplay Contest
May 4, 6-9 p.m.
Urban Arts Gallery
137 S. Rio Grande St., Salt Lake City
The gallery’s annual “Heroes and Villains” exhibit features "Star Wars" fan art from a variety of local artists. The exhibit will be on display through June 3. Friday’s event will be the opening reception for the display, and costumes are encouraged. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
May The 4th Be With You at the Viridian Event Center
May 4, 7 p.m.
Salt Lake County Library Viridian Event Center
8030 S. 1825 West, West Jordan
Featuring a Mos Eisley Cantina theme, this event is for adults 18 and older. Costumes are recommended for this annual event. Admission is free, but a ticket is required and can be reserved at viridiancenter.org.
May the 4th Celebration with Life, the Universe, and Everything
May 4, 6-7 p.m.
Orem Public Library, 58 N. State St.
This family-friendly event will feature an interactive program with focuses on world building and writing science fiction.
"Star Wars" Train Ride
May 4, June 7-9 and August 17-18
Heber Valley Historic Railroad
450 S. 600 West, Heber
The special "Star Wars" train runs on several dates throughout the summer with a 7 p.m. departure time and a 9 p.m. return. The ride features photo ops with "Star Wars" characters, as well as trivia and prize contests. Admission is $15 for the round-trip ride; although we’re not sure if the train is quite fast enough to make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.
May the Fourth Be With You Celebration
May 4, 4-11 p.m.
Clark Planetarium
110 S. 400 West, Salt Lake City
Shows at the planetarium are $4 after 4 p.m. The event will also feature photo ops with "Star Wars" characters from 6-9 p.m., as well as life-size droids and a behind-the-scenes look at lightsabers. Cosplayers are encouraged.
