SALT LAKE CITY — A 57-year-old woman died after being hit by a TRAX train Friday near 400 S. 900 East, officials said.

Surveillance video showed a woman, later identified by officials as Marie Gay Cardwell, was on a platform at the station and appeared to have stumbled forward and hit by the train as it was arriving, pushing Cardwell backward, Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky said.

The incident took place about 5 p.m. Cardwell had been transported to a hospital about 5:30 p.m. but died from her injuries.

It remains unclear what caused Cardwell to stumble, however, Arky said Cardwell had been having seizures lately and had been known to fall. It was not immediately known if Cardwell was with a group of people or by herself at the time she was struck.

The train was not traveling at a high speed when Cardwell was hit, Arky said. Since the crash took place at a peak traffic time, there were extra cars on the train and a heavy load of people, he said.

TRAX's southbound red line experienced temporary delays while officials investigated the scene.
