PHOENIX (AP) — The closing days of the Republican primary to replace an Arizona congressman who quit in a sex scandal have included a top contender admitting he received texts from a Senate aide posing topless. A second is fighting claims of campaign funding improprieties.

Former state Sen. Steve Montenegro said that he received sexually provocative messages from a state Senate staffer but denied any improper relationship. Former state Sen. Debbie Lesko is denying claims she improperly tapped her state campaign funds.

They and former Rep. Phil Lovas are among a dozen Republicans on Tuesday's primary ballot.

The developments might have come too late to have a major impact because of early voting.

The 8th Congressional District is a GOP stronghold in the Phoenix suburbs. Two Democrats are seeking their party's nomination.
