DUCHESNE — One student is in custody after Duchesne High School received a violent threat on Thursday afternoon.

No injuries were reported, but the school was on lockdown while Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office deputies searched the school campus, according to an emailed statement from the sheriff's office.

Nearby Duchesne Elementary also was on lockdown as a precaution, according to Duchesne County Sheriff David Boren. The lockdowns were lifted at both schools at 2:35 p.m. as the school day ended.

A small group of students reported the threat to Principal Stan Young at about 1:40 p.m. Thursday, Boren said. Young then called police, and two sheriff's deputies who were near the school at the time responded to the school in less than two minutes.

The deputies took one male student into custody at gunpoint at about 1:50 p.m., Boren said. Two other male students also were held for questioning.

Although law enforcement dispatchers broadcast an "active shooter" call after Young reported the threat, deputies did not find any firearms or explosives at the school.

“Because this was dispatched as an active shooter call our deputies responded accordingly and appropriately,” Boren said.

Students were released from school on schedule and buses ran normally, Boren said.

Extra counselors will be at the school on Friday for any students or teachers who might be in need, Duchesne County School District Student Services Director Scott Forsyth said.

Law enforcement officials from the Roosevelt Police Department, Adult Probation and Parole and the Utah Highway Patrol assisted the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office with the search of the school, Boren said.

Anyone with information about the situation is asked to contact the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office at 435-738-2015.
