LAYTON — A man suspected of an aggravated robbery is in custody after he barricaded himself in a Layton apartment Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a robbery around noon, according to Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman. He said a 19-year-old man went to an Arby's, located 987 N. Fairfield Road, and met two men at a parking lot to purchase a cellphone that was listed online.
The victim then went inside a vehicle where the men, identified as 20-year-old Hayden Woods and 29-year-old Mitchell Tarbox, attempted to rob him at gunpoint, Lyman said. The man was able to escape from the vehicle and call police.
"He was able to fight his way out of the car and called us quickly," Lyman said.
The man told police of one of the robbers' names, which Lyman said officers were familiar with, and they responded to an apartment address near 225 N. Fairfield Road where Woods resides. Lyman said Woods refused to cooperate with police, leading to a standoff.
Tarbox was taken into custody outside of the apartment without incident.
Lyman said a woman and two small children were also in the apartment but were later able to get out of the building safe after some negotiation.
"We actually made partial entry into the apartment and at that point (we) convinced her to come out and bring the kids out," he said. Lyman added the woman was police's contact with the apartment.
The woman, who Lyman said is the mother of Woods' child, was taken into custody and was being questioned for her involvement in the "non-cooperation that we got from her and him."
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., Woods was taken into custody after a police robot was sent into the apartment, Lyman said. A tactical team used the robot to help locate Woods, who was hiding in a closet in a bedroom. Woods surrendered shortly after, Lyman said.
No injuries were reported and neighboring apartments were evacuated as a precaution, Lyman said.
Lyman added the gun used in the robbery attempt was collected by police.
