SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 32-year-old bystander was wounded by gunfire outside a 7-Eleven Saturday during a confrontation that police say was gang-related.

Two teenage boys, ages 16 and 17, were taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Both were booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller.

The injured man was struck in the foot as he was getting into his car. He was treated at a hospital and was later released, Keller said.

The incident began about 1 p.m. when occupants of a westbound car stopped at the traffic light at 2700 S. State exchanged gang signs with two males standing on the northwest corner of the intersection.

After the car pulled into the convenience store parking lot, two males standing on the street corner began firing at the car, Keller said. Police are still investigating whether the occupants of the vehicle returned fire.

The vehicle sped away and two people ran away on foot from the area. Police dogs later located the two teenagers hiding in a garage about a block away from the convenience store. Officers also recovered a handgun, Keller said.
