Hill, Kavas help Seattle hold off Nicholls State 95-89

SEATTLE (AP) — Jordan Hill scored 23 points with five 3-pointers, and Matej Kavas added 20 more, including a late basket that helped Seattle hold off a charging Nicholls State 95-89 on Saturday.

Aaron Menzies also scored 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds — his fifth double-double this season — for the Redhawks (9-6) and Richaud Gittens added 18 points. Hill had eight assists.

Seattle never trailed, led by as many as 21 in the first half and was still ahead by 14 (76-62) with just under nine minutes left. Kimani Jackson and Lafayette Rutledge scored in a 7-2 spurt to begin the Nicholls rally. The Colonels were still down 10 when Roddy Peters scored nine of his 26 points over the final 3:39. He then dished to Jahvaughn Powell for a layup and made a steal that led to two Jackson free throws as Nicholls State cut a the lead down to 92-89 with 42 seconds remaining.

Seattle worked the clock to 14 seconds and Kavas answered with a layup that pushed the lead back to five, 94-89.

Powell added a career-high 21 points for the Colonels (6-7).
