CRESCENT JUNCTION, Grand County — A child was airlifted to a Colorado hospital in critical condition after a crash on I-70, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper said.
The crash took place at about 6:06 a.m. Sunday just west of the Crescent Junction interchange, according to a news release from Grand County Emergency Medical Service Director Andy Smith.
A father and two children were driving in a Nissan Altima when the Altima crashed into the back of a dump truck, which was traveling below the speed limit, Hopper said. The driver apparently did not realize the dump truck was traveling slowly, Hopper said.
The 10-year-old son lost consciousness and his pulse following the crash, Hopper said.
Medical personnel responding to the scene were able to regain the boy’s pulse, and he was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado in critical condition, Hopper said.
The father and another son had minor injuries. Two other individuals were taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital, and two were taken by ambulance to Moab Regional Hospital, Smith said in the release.
It was not clear how many people were in each vehicle. All were wearing seat belts, Hopper said.
I-70 was closed for about 45 minutes while investigators cleaned up the crash scene, he said.
