SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police are investigating a homicide in the city's Ballpark neighborhood.

The investigation began around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, when police say they "received information about a possible death at a home near Van Buren Avenue and Main Street."

When officers arrived at the home, they discovered a 34-year-old man, later identified as Samuel Owen, and a 6-year-old boy who were both dead. The case is being investigated as a murder-suicide involving a firearm, according to police.

"This is a very tragic moment for our community," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. "These are among the most difficult calls for service our officers, detectives, crime lab technicians, victim advocates and social workers handle. My condolences and prayers are with those impacted by this loss."

This incident marks the fourth homicide in Salt Lake City this year.
