SALT LAKE CITY — Snap Inc., owner of the popular Snapchat app, is officially opening an office in Utah after months of speculation, according to the Utah Technology Council President and CEO John Knotwell.

In October, Snap Inc. was rumored to be building an office in Lehi, though the location has not yet been confirmed. The California company finalized its decision Thursday to open an office in the state with 50 employees over the next 15 years.

Projected new state wages over the life of the agreement may add up to $334 million, according to the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

“We are learning time and time again that our quality of life, focus on STEM education and collaborative spirit are a magnifying force for companies to move to Utah,” Knotwell said in a news release. “Snapchat is one of the most widely-used social media platforms in the world. Their new office will add a unique and creative perspective to the makeup of Silicon Slopes. And it’s always fun to watch Governor Herbert learn how to add filters to selfies.”

Knotwell recently accompanied Governor Gary Herbert on a corporate recruitment trip to the Golden State.

“Snap Inc.’s innovative approach and high paying jobs are a natural fit for our thriving tech community,” said Val Hale, executive director of GOED. “Snap acquired a Utah County-based company a few years ago and we are pleased that they have maintained strong ties to the state since then. Their presence in the state will be a nice addition to the state’s growing tech industry.”

Joining Snap Inc. is fellow California company Carta, which will expand operations to Utah and add up to 464 jobs to the state, along with $5.7 million in new state revenue and an estimated $5.7 million in capital investment, according to a GOED press release.

Carta hopes to make it simple for companies of all stages to turn their employees into owners by helping them manage ownership electronically.

Salt Lake City-based company TaskEasy is also expanding throughout the Beehive State and will add up to 191 jobs, $5.3 million in new state revenue and an estimated $6.5 million in capital investment, according to GOED. TaskEasy delivers lawn care services directly to customers via a mobile app and website.
