(KSL News) The woman accused of setting numerous fires in her Ogden neighborhood has been appointed a public defense attorney.

Marianne Mancuso, 47, appeared in court for the first time yesterday. She faces charges of arson in connection with fires set in the area of Kiesel Avenue and 18th Street.

Police say Mancuso told them she wanted to see the Ogden River Project move forward. The River Project is a mixed-use development that will take up 51 acres of downtown Ogden.

The homes where the fires have occurred will eventually all be demolished. Officials admit progress on the project has slowed, but they say burning down homes won't speed anything up.

Mancuso will appear in court again tomorrow for a bail hearing.
