WEST VALLEY CITY — John and Laura Lauber have a lot to be grateful for. Their grandson has come a long way since suffering a severe head injury on Sept. 1.

"He's making a miraculous recovery," John Lauber said. "He's up and walking, and we're just so thankful."

He, his wife and their son and his family were driving along U.S. Highway 6, on their way to vacation in Moab, when John said he veered off the road near the mouth of Crandall Canyon.

"I drifted off the side," John Lauber said. "I overcorrected and we ended up rolling the trailer and the car three times."

Aside from 10-year-old Gavin Lauber's head injury, no one else was badly injured in the accident.

"Everybody was so disoriented," Laura Lauber said. "[We're] grateful for seat belts. We could have been killed."

The couple did, however, lose one family member in the crash: a Manchester Terrier named Stella.

"I remember her just going over my shoulder, and that was it," Laura Lauber explained. She said a witness saw the dog run off.

With the crash scene so far away, the Laubers are hoping someone might spot the dog.

"I literally begged the authorities to let me go look for her, but they wouldn't allow me to do it because of all that was going on," Laura Lauber said.

She said people who have heard her story over social media have tried looking, without any success.

Meantime, the Laubers said Gavin is expected to come home within a week. The family has posted a fundraising page to help cover medical expenses.
