SALT LAKE CITY — A former Cottonwood High teacher convicted of sexually abusing a 15-year-old student in his classroom has been sentenced to jail.

Corbin Vance Robinson, 38, of Holladay, was convicted in March of sex abuse of a minor student, a third-degree felony. On Friday, he was given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to serve one year in the Salt Lake County Jail, followed by three years of probation.

Robinson was originally charged with nine counts of sexual abuse of a minor, a third-degree felony.

The first-year social studies teacher had been exchanging inappropriate texts with one of his students, according to the charges. On four occasions, according to charging documents, the girl skipped class to be with Robinson in his classroom during fourth period. Each time Robinson would lock his classroom door, turn out the lights and close the blinds and inappropriately touch the girl, the charges state.

Robinson was a student teacher at Cottonwood High in 2015 and began teaching full time in 2016. On his LinkedIn page, Robinson also lists himself as the assistant girls golf coach and says he briefly participated in a student teacher program at Hillcrest High School. Robinson also listed himself as a "student mentor" for Rose Park Elementary School.
