PROVO — Seven Peaks Waterpark was evacuated after a chlorine spill, Provo Fire and Rescue officials confirmed Friday.
At 5:08 p.m. dispatch received a 911 call of a chlorine leak, said Provo Fire Captain Dean York. When crews arrived, some of the park visitors were complaining of wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. The park was immediately evacuated, York said.
“If it is chlorine, it’s heavier than air, so it tends to stay lower to the ground," he said. "We had people in the water that’s just about their head level, so we had the park evacuated at that time."
One child was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Crews checked out eleven other people who felt ill, but none chose to be transported to a hospital by ambulance, though they may have driven themselves to a hospital, York said.
Once the park was evacuated, fire crews determined the area where the leak occurred. York said Seven Peaks employees had helped take care of the problem along with fire crews.
The waterpark will remain closed for the rest of the night.
“Between Seven Peaks and OSHA, I’m sure there will be an investigation,” York said. “Whether it was a mechanical issue or just some sort of spill.”
