The Utah National Guard's 85th Civil Support Team quickly packed up and moved out this morning.
Lt. Col. Kevin Nuccetelli said, "The state of Texas called on Monday. We packed up yesterday." He says 16 members will be gone for two weeks to help support the Hurricane Ike recovery effort.
This isn't the first time the team has been deployed to the Gulf Coast region. After hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the guard spent time in some of the hardest hit areas of Louisiana helping to re-establish communication to the area and assisting authorities in surveying potential hazardous materials in the area.
First Sgt. Darren Budget went with the team to help after hurricanes Rita and Katrina. He said, "We are all Americans. It's important that we help out each other."
The team consists of members of the Utah Air and Army National Guard. Members are trained to assist civilian authorities with detection, assessment and response capabilities for hazardous materials.
The team will relieve Wyoming's 84th Civil Support team which is currently providing support to authorities in Beaumont, Texas.
