SALT LAKE CITY — Former Salt Lake City Bishop George H. Niederauer of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake, died Tuesday afternoon in San Rafael, California, according to diocese officials.

Niederauer, 80, was the archbishop emeritus of San Francisco at the time of his death and served as bishop of Salt Lake City from 1994 until 2005.

He passed away at a nursing home in San Rafael. Funeral arrangements are pending, but he will be buried at the San Francisco cathedral where he served as archbishop from December 2005 until his resignation in July 2012 after undergoing emergency double bypass heart surgery.

“The passing of his excellency Bishop George H. Niederauer will be felt by many in the state of Utah," said Gov. Gary Herbert in a statement. "As the eighth bishop of the Salt Lake City Diocese, Bishop Niederauer made an indelible mark on our community through his spiritual leadership. His ten years of service here were marked with great collaboration in the faith community. His loss is felt deeply.”
