BONNERS FERRY, Idaho — Two cases of dynamite were discovered after a section of road was washed out in northern Idaho Sunday.

Shoshana Cooper, public affairs officer for the Idaho Panhandle National Forest, said a bomb squad from Spokane, Washington was called out and successfully cleared the dynamite by burning the cases.

The two cases of dynamite were discovered near Myrtle Creek Road in the Bonners Ferry Ranger District in Boundary County and appeared to have been buried for some time. Investigators on the scene estimated the dynamite was about 40 or 50 years old.

The road is currently closed to the public due to a soft and unstable roadbed and will remain closed through the early part of spring until flooding is expected to stop. Cooper said officials have not yet evaluated to see how extensive the road damage is.
