SALT LAKE CITY — Between 20 and 30 people were displaced Friday following a fire at an apartment complex.
Salt Lake firefighters were called to the Aspen Cove Townhomes, 1834 W. Independence Blvd. (1475 North), about 11:15 a.m.
The fire started on the second floor of one of the units, said Salt Lake fire spokeswoman Audra Sorensen. It took crews about 30 minutes to get it out, she said. The cause of the fire was still under investigation Friday evening.
Damage was estimated at $200,000. No injuries were reported.
Sorensen was hopeful Friday evening that all of the units could avoid becoming a total loss.
"The front of the building (looked) pretty good and the individual in that particular apartment (where the fire started) walked out the front door," indicating the interior of the apartments may have escaped the brunt of the damage, she said.
The "whole rooftop of the complex" was affected by the spread of the fire, according to Sorensen.
Fewer people than normal needed to escape the building because the fire occurred in the middle of the day, when a lot of the residents were away, she said.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to help displaced tenants. Information on how many people used the agency's accommodations was not immediately available.
