MURRAY — Firefighters and police officers rushed into action Saturday evening to save people from a fast-moving apartment fire.
The fire started just before 7:30 p.m., at the Brittany Apartments, 4652 S. 700 East, during a time when a lot of residents were home.
"First arriving units found heavy fire venting out of multiple windows on the second floor," said Murray Fire Battalion Chief Joseph Treadwell.
Firefighters rescued two people from a balcony, but a "third ... was overcome with a fair amount of fear and decided to jump," Treadwell said.
The person who jumped was taken to the hospital with "what appears to be a minor injury," he said.
The battalion chief said two Murray police officers and five residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and released.
Only two families were not able to return to their apartments Saturday, Treadwell said, but representatives from the Red Cross were there to help them with whatever they needed.
Firefighters planned to stay on scene late into the night to knock down any hot spots. Investigators have not determined what caused the fire.
