SALT LAKE CITY — Police are investigating the death of a woman struck and killed by a Union Pacific train on Sunday.

Salt Lake Police Sgt. Cody Lougy said the woman, in her 50s, was hit by a southbound Union Pacific train about 4 p.m. near 500 W. North Temple, an area both freight and FrontRunner trains frequent.

Surveillance footage showed the woman wandering back and forth across the tracks with no apparent destination, Lougy said. Investigators are looking into whether drugs, alcohol or mental illness contributed to the incident.

"In the video we just see her walking back and forth, it looks like there's no real direction she's going, so we're just not sure what the root cause is of this," Lougy said. "We're not sure what her intentions were at this time."

Police are also working to identify the woman and notify her family, Lougy said, calling the death "a tragedy."

East and westbound traffic was prevented from crossing the tracks while police investigated the death.
