SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Gov. Jon Huntsman has called state lawmakers to a special session to address a budget shortfall caused by the sluggish economy.
The Legislature's Executive Appropriations Committee will meet Thursday to review new projections for state revenue and adjust the 2009 budget, which must be approved by the House and Senate.
The Legislature had anticipated a $776 million surplus for the fiscal year that began in July. But the Revenue Estimates Committee said Monday that the total was too high by $274.4 million. An initial estimate of the shortfall was about $200 million last week when lawmakers asked Huntsman to call the special session.
The revised estimates still give the state more than $330 million surplus.
