WEST VALLEY CITY — A 34-year-old man is dead and another man was critically injured in a shooting at a store parking lot in West Valley City early Saturday.

Police said Gary Hart, of West Valley City, was killed in the shooting. Another man, whose name and age were not immediately released, remains in serious condition at a local hospital.

A third adult male suffered minor injuries.

Police received calls just after 4 a.m. about gunshots at the parking lot of Shopko, 4850 W. 3500 South, according to West Valley Police Lt. Amy Maurer.

When officers arrived, they found a group of people and two shooting victims, Hart and the other man, Maurer said.

West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said investigators believe that some of the people involved in the incident had been attending a party near where the shooting occurred.

Those individuals and others then met up at the parking lot, where an altercation broke out that led to the shooting.

Vainuku said investigators believe the shooting may have been gang-related, but the exact motive remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

She said anyone who may have any information regarding the case is encouraged to call West Valley police at 801-840-4000 and that tips can be made anonymously.
