PROVO — A cyclist was killed Sunday evening after a hit-and-run accident, police said.
The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at 920 S. 400 West, according to Provo police Lt. Brandon Post. The cyclist and driver of the vehicle were both traveling westbound on 920 South, with the bicyclist traveling in the middle lane of traffic, when he was hit by the vehicle, police said. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but left behind enough debris that police were able to identify the make, model and color of the vehicle.
Post said there was no braking prior to the crash, and the impact was significant enough that there was no way the driver wouldn't have known what had happened. Based on the timeline given by witnesses, if the driver stopped at all following the collision, it was only briefly, Post said.
The bicyclist, 62-year-old Mark Robinson, of Provo, was killed in the accident.
Around 9:30 p.m., the driver of the vehicle, a 30-year-old man, turned himself into police at the Provo Police Department. He is cooperating with police during the investigation and detectives will determine if any charges will be filed.
The driver was using his cellphone to locate an address at the time of the accident, police said.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
