COVE FORT, Millard County — A multiple-car crash involving a snow plow, a semitrailer and several other vehicles sent six people to the hospital and backed up traffic to a standstill for some time Saturday about six miles north of Cove Fort.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jacob Cox said a minor crash involving a snow plow and a passenger car occurred just before noon on northbound I-15, slowing down traffic as both vehicles moved to the side of the road.

Then, Cox said, a semitrailer driver appeared to not see the traffic slow down and crashed into a pickup truck that was also stopped at the side of the road. Another driver in front of that truck saw the semi coming and veered into the ditch. The truck was pushed on top of the car in front of it and that car was pushed into another semitrailer at the front of the line, according to the UHP.

No fatalities were reported, but Cox said some motorists suffered serious injuries, including a pregnant woman and her sister in the car that was sandwiched between the first semitrailer and the truck on top of it.

First responders initially thought the pregnant woman had died, but they discovered a pulse once she was extricated from the vehicle, according to the UHP. She was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo in extremely critical condition. Her sister was taken to the same hospital, listed in poor condition.

Three people who had been in the truck were taken to a Fillmore hospital in fair to poor conditions and the driver of the errant semitrailer was also transported to Provo in poor to critical condition, the UHP reported. It appears the driver did not attempt to stop before hitting the string of vehicles, according to investigators.

Troopers said all occupants involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Northbound traffic on I-15 was closed for at least two hours.
