SALT LAKE CITY — A recount of more than 17,000 votes in the razor-thin contest between one of the Utah House's most outspoken conservative voices and his Democratic challenger has confirmed a Republican win.

Results released Monday gave Rep. LaVar Christensen, R-Draper, a five-vote victory over Democrat Suzanne Harrison in the House District 32 race. Christensen previously led by three votes.

That makes Christensen the unofficial winner until the Salt Lake County Council meets Tuesday to certify the results.

"I look forward to serving and representing the citizens in our district for another term and doing all we can together for the great state of Utah," Christensen said in a statement Monday.

It was a high-interest race for the Utah Democratic Party, which saw only two victories in the House this election cycle.

Under Utah law, Harrison and the Democratic Party still have the option to challenge the narrow loss in court. Chairman Peter Corroon said Monday the party is "still evaluating our options."

"No decision has been made at this point," Corroon said.
