MACON, Ga. (AP) — John Russ found Jordan Marshall from 33-yards out for the game-winning touchdown with 31 seconds left and Mercer came back to beat Furman 27-24 on Saturday.
The catch, Marshall's only reception of the game, capped a 7-play, 64-yard drive that ate up just 45 seconds of the clock.
Furman had a final opportunity to win it, driving 23 yards on two plays to the Mercer 31 after a strong kick return by Thomas Gordon. But Reese Hannon's next pass was intercepted in the end zone by Jeremy James, and the Bears (6-5, 4-4 Southern Conference) ran out the clock.
Russ threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 119 more with a score for Mercer. Chandler Curtis added 67 yards receiving and a score for the Bears.
Hannon led Furman (3-8, 3-5) with 251 yards passing, 41 rushing, and three total scores. Gordon added 112 yards receiving.
