NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has more meetings today as he continues work on his transition to the White House. Trump plans to meet with retired Gen. James Mattis, a contender to lead the Pentagon. He's also meeting with 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who lambasted Trump as a "con man" and a "fraud" in a stinging speech in March. Trump responded by repeatedly referring to Romney as a "loser."
LIMA, Peru (AP) — President Barack Obama will close a three-nation, post-U.S. election tour the same way he opened it. He wants to reassure world leaders that U.S. democracy isn't broken and everything will be fine when Donald Trump succeeds him next year. Obama is in Lima, Peru, for an annual Asia-Pacific summit. Global concerns about Trump's pending ascension to the White House overshadowed the president's interactions with world leaders earlier this week in Athens, Greece, and Berlin.
LIMA, Peru (AP) — China's president is calling for a free trade agreement across the Asia-Pacific region to promote more equitable global growth. In a keynote address to business leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Peru, Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) made an impassioned call against protectionism. He warned that protectionism is on the rise, endangering the progress made over the past two decades lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The jury that convicted a young man of aggravated murder and other charges in a triple homicide at a suburban Cleveland barbershop has reached a decision on whether to recommend the death penalty. The jury's decision in the sentencing phase of 21-year-old Douglas Shine Jr.'s murder trial is expected to be read today. The jury began deliberations yesterday.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A week-old newborn girl who went missing after her mother was shot to death has been found alive in Dallas. The Wichita Eagle reports that police say suspects in the 27-year-old woman's death took the child and fled to Texas. Police say two people are in custody. Police and the FBI had been looking for the child since Thursday.
