LAYTON — An active member of Hill Air Force Base was arrested by Layton police on base Friday in connection with a recent bank robbery.
Sonny West, 20, was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery.
On Nov. 10, a man wearing a ball cap, sunglasses and mask covering half of his face walked into the Washington Federal Credit Union and robbed the bank at gunpoint, said Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman.
After the incident, police sent out information about the robbery to other law enforcement agencies statewide, including the military. On Thursday, Lyman said detectives received a tip that led them to the military base.
With assistance from military police, Layton officers went on base and arrested West in his dorm about midnight. Evidence was also collected, including clothing believed to have been worn during the bank robbery, money from the bank and the gun used, which was a BB gun, Lyman said.
Detectives believe West used the money to buy clothes, an iPhone and car parts, he said.
Layton police do not believe the man is connected to any other robberies in their area.
"Base officials are cooperating with local law enforcement after the arrest of A1C Sonny West in connection with a bank robbery in Layton. Airman West is assigned to the 75th Security Forces Squadron as an entry controller. Airman West joined the Air Force in November 2015 and has been assigned to Hill since May of this year. Airman West has been removed from any law-enforcement related duties," Hill Air Force Base said in prepared statement.
