SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a handful of people protesting an oil pipeline project in North Dakota have been arrested in Salt Lake City.
KUTV reports (http://bit.ly/2eNMlva) that more than 100 people gathered on Main Street on Monday chanting slogans like "Water is life," and "Keep it in the soil, you can't drink oil."
Approximately eight arrests happened after protesters chained themselves together with a bike lock in the Wells Fargo Center.
The Utah protest comes as hundreds of Standing Rock Sioux tribal members hold a months-long campaign to protest the Dakota Access oil pipeline.
The protest boiled over this month with some 400 arrests.
The tribe says it will damage its water supply and endanger sacred sites.
State officials say no sensitive cultural sites have been found on the conduit's route from western North Dakota to Illinois.
