SARATOGA SPRINGS — Police have released the name of the man who was buried when a trench collapsed at a construction site Friday.

Yong Whan Kim, 20, of Lehi, was in an area of the site, near 1917 Centennial Blvd., where he wasn't supposed to be when he was covered with a deadly amount of dirt for unknown reasons about 2:30 p.m., according to Saratoga Springs Police Cpl. Jason Ruch.

Kim had reportedly taken a break and hadn't returned for about 10 to 20 minutes, according to another worker who was running the backhoe in the trench where Kim was killed. Ruch said the other worker got back to work and while digging uncovered Kim's safety vest and then began digging by hand to retrieve his co-worker.

Kim was an employee with Hadco Construction, which was contracted to work on the Richmond American Homes building site. It is unknown how long he had been employed, Ruch said.

Police have completed their investigation of the accident, though the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was still investigating Saturday.

Ruch said Hadco had been cleared to continue work at the site.
