OREM, Utah (AP) -- Transportation experts are hoping a rapid transit system for Provo and Orem will mean shorter waits, newer buses and faster commutes.

A governing committee that's overseeing the project has given approval for the transit corridor, which will require some streets to be widened. An environmental analysis of the project still has to be done before construction begins. Organizers say that study should be finished and sent off for federal approval by the end of the year.

The transit system will be designed to funnel buses from Orem along University Parkway and into Provo every five minutes.

Project leader Chad Eccles says he's hoping the transit corridor will be up and running by 2011, just in time for commuter rail lines to reach Utah County.
