OGDEN — Amer Kabir says he never expected to get robbed when he saw one of his regular customers at the Kwick Stop along 21st street near Jefferson avenue Monday morning.
"I was thinking he was joking," Kabir explained "[He] asked me 'What if I grabbed a couple of packs of cigarettes and walked out the door?' I said, 'You're not going to do that.' And he actually did."
Kabir said at one point, the man police have identified a22-year-old Ryan Conroy, pointed at the handle of a sword, that was sticking out the top of his backpack. Still, Kabir continued after him.
"[I] tried to stop him," Kabir said. "And he just pulled it out. He said, 'You're not going to stop me.'"
Just a moment later, Kabir said another customer called police.
"At that time, the suspect had a makeshift machete in his backpack," Ogden Lieutenant Nate Cline explained. "The suspect pulled out the machete from his backpack, and advised the victim to not contact anybody or the police."
Officers however say they caught up with Conroy along the 2300 block of Jefferson avenue. Cline said the homemade sword had a serrated edge and was 36 inches long.
Ryan Conroy is in the Weber County where he faces one charge of aggravated robbery.
