RUSSIA — Researchers are investigating a strong signal that was recently discovered in deep space.
The signal was discovered by using the RATAN-600 radio telescope in Russia, according to the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute). Researchers say the signal is coming from a solar system called HD 164595, which is about 95 light years away.
Scientists are not saying the signal is necessarily alien in nature, but that it does warrant further study, according to the SETI Institute.
The International Academy of Astronautics’ SETI Permanent Committee will discuss the discovery at a meeting in September, according to Newsweek.
“The chance that this is truly a signal from extraterrestrials is not terribly promising, and the discoverers themselves apparently doubt that they’ve found ET,” wrote Seth Shostak, senior astronomer for the SETI Institute. “Nonetheless, one should check out all reasonable possibilities, given the importance of the subject."
Scientists have also pointed the Allen Telescope Array in California towards the origin of the signal to learn more about it, according to the SETI Institute.
