AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — The death toll in central Italy's devastating earthquake has risen to 278. Civil protection officials gave the updated toll at a briefing. They also say 238 people caught up in the quake have been rescued. Some people are still unaccounted for in the hardest-hit area. The mayor of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh) estimates that at least 15 people are missing there. And Romania says at least 21 of its citizens are missing in the earthquake zone.
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are reporting the first case of Zika spread through sex by a man with no symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the incident involves a Maryland man who went to the Dominican Republic, where there is a Zika outbreak. He didn't get sick but his sex partner did and recovered. In previous cases of sexual transmission, the virus was spread by someone who at some point had symptoms. Zika is mainly spread by mosquitoes, and causes only a mild illness in most people. But infection during pregnancy can lead to severe birth defects.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati police are asking for the public's help in finding the source of the suspected heroin behind an estimated 78 overdoses in two days this week. Authorities believe the same batch is linked to three recent deaths. There were an estimated 78 overdoses on Tuesday and Wednesday and 174 overdoses in emergency rooms within the past week. Meanwhile, an Akron, Ohio, man has been charged with heroin distribution in connection with 27 drug overdoses in five hours in Huntington, West Virginia, earlier this month. One man died.
DETROIT (AP) — The federal government wants to limit how fast trucks, buses and other large vehicles can travel on the nation's highways. A new proposal would impose a nationwide limit by electronically capping speeds with a device on newly made U.S. vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds. Regulators are considering a cap of 60, 65 or 68 miles per hour, though that could change. The move is aimed at reducing the more than 1,100 fatal crashes involving heavy trucks that occur each year.
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A co-pilot on a charter plane in northern Michigan has been arrested after a colleague suspected that he was drunk. Traverse City police say a breath test showed the co-pilot had a blood-alcohol level of 0.30, nearly four times the legal threshold for driving. The co-pilot flies for Talon Air, which declined to comment. The plane didn't leave Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City yesterday.
