LONDON (AP) — The accused killer of British lawmaker Jo Cox has given his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" in his first court appearance. Thomas Mair made his defiant statement today in Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. He was charged overnight with murder, inflicting grievous harm and gun offenses in the slaying Thursday of the 41-year-old member of Parliament. Cox was an advocate for keeping Britain inside the EU and had argued for better treatment of Syrian refugee children.

BRUSSELS (AP) — Soccer-watching parties have been held across Belgium, hours after authorities raided dozens of homes and arrested 12 people as part of a major anti-terror investigation. Some media reports had said events connected to the European Championships in neighboring France could have been targets of terrorists. No major incidents were reported today as Belgium beat Ireland, 3-0.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi forces have gained control of the main hospital in Fallujah after driving the Islamic State group from most of the city. That's according to an Iraqi military official, who says troops found no patients inside the hospital when they stormed it. Iraqi forces have also captured another neighborhood in the city, which had been under the control of IS militants since January 2014.

BATH, Maine (AP) — The mother of a fallen Navy SEAL has christened the US Navy's second Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer. The ship is named for Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor, a Navy SEAL from California who was awarded the Medal of Honor after his death in Iraq in 2006. His mother, Sally Monsoor, smashed a bottle of champagne on the ship at this morning's ceremony in Bath, Maine.

DETROIT (AP) — Authorities say former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling has been arrested again on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon. Detroit police say Appling was arrested early today after officers stopped a fast-driving Dodge Charger. Police say officers saw Appling, who was a passenger, place a weapon under a seat. The arrest comes days before Appling faces a hearing on weapons and drug charges from a May arrest outside a suburban Detroit strip club. Friday's hearing determines whether he goes to trial. Appling's attorney, Cyril Hall, says Appling hasn't been formally charged in his latest arrest.
