Sam Penrod ReportingLt. Dave Caron, Springville Police: "They were looking forward new school year and to a bright future."
Tragedy hits Springville. Three teenagers died in a car wreck late last night. There is shock and sadness in Springville today with news that three teenagers are dead, two girls and a boy. The three of them were together in a car last night in Hobble Creek Canyon.
The accident happened at a curve as you start up the canyon. Police say the Mustang with five teenagers in it was coming down the canyon, at what is being described a high rate of speed, when the driver lost control and went into the other lane of traffic. An SUV was heading up the canyon and the car crashed into it.
Three people in the back of the mustang were killed, a boy and two girls. Police say the two girls were ejected out of the back window. All of them died at the scene.
Lt. Dave Caron, Springville Police: "Their families are having a real hard time understanding why, which is an answer I can't give. We can tell them how it happened, but the whys and things like that, no matter what answer we give, it will never be enough."
The victims are Katelyn Gabbitas, age 17, of Springville; Tasha Brammer, age 18, of Mapleton; and Brady Conger, age 17, of Springville. The other two teens, the 16-year old driver and a 17-year old in the passenger seat were injured, but were buckled up and police say they should recover.
The father and son riding in the Suburban told us the car came at them so fast, there was nothing they could do.
Marshall Romney, Accident Victim: "You go over in your mind, could you have done anything different? And we went and looked at the scene again this morning and there was just not enough room by the time we came around that curve; there was absolutely no time to react."
Miles Romney, Accident Victim: "Was there anything we could have done to help the situation? But it happened so fast we were almost off the side of the road, and it came so fast and it happened so fast, there was nothing we could do."
The Romneys say they are thankful they both walked away with minor injuries, but they are now mourning for the families of the teens who died.
Miles Romney, Accident Victim: "Seeing those poor girls, they were young, they were vibrant, having a good time before, and now it's over."
Springville police Lt. Dave Caron said Wednesday it didn't appear alcohol was involved.
