(KSL News) The relative of an American Olympic coach is improving after being stabbed in Beijing.
According to a spokesman for the U.S. Olympic team, Barbara Bachman's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.
Mrs. Bachman was with her husband Todd when they were stabbed by a Chinese man Saturday.
Todd Bachman was killed in the attack. The Bachman's daughter, Elisabeth, witnessed the stabbing. She is a former Olympian and graduate of BYU. Elisabeth is married to U.S. Volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon. He also coached at BYU.
McCutcheon says his family has been consumed with the shock of his father-in-law's death and with arranging care for his mother-in-law. He says, "We're not getting a lot of sleep. We're talking and hugging and crying and trying to get through it together, but the fact that we're able to talk about it is, I think, a pretty good indication at this stage."
The assailant took his own life shortly after the attack. Chinese officials call the incident random and believe the man was distraught over family problems.
