Czech painter, illustrator, cartoonist Adolf Born dies at 85

PRAGUE (AP) — Adolf Born, a Czech painter, illustrator, cartoonist, caricaturist and author of animated movies for children, has died.

Born's daughter Erika told Czech public television he died Sunday morning at home in Prague. He was 85.

Born's grotesque paintings and pictures have been displayed at exhibitions around the globe while he received various international rewards and honors, including the Grand Prix at the International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal and the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France.

In his homeland, he was loved by children for his animated movies, among them the "Mach and Sebestova" cartoon series about two schoolmates whose dreams become reality with help from a magical telephone receiver.
