METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints signed rookie defensive lineman David Onyemata to a four-year contract Wednesday.
The Saints selected Onyemata in the fourth round of the draft with the 120th overall pick. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Nigerian played in Canada at the University of Manitoba.
In 37 career games, Onyemata had 166 tackles, 9 1/2 sacks, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Last season, he had 50 tackles, five sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over nine starts.
Onyemata played soccer during his youth in Nigeria and knew virtually nothing about the type of football he's playing now until he showed up on Manitoba's campus in 2011.
