(KSL News) An alert teen may have saved his family's home from burning to the ground today.

Fire officials say the 16-year-old boy and his younger brother were at their home in Kearns while the rest of the family was taking a walk. That's when the teen heard something unusual.

"The 16-year-old heard what he thought sounded like rain outside. He ran outside to see what was going on, because it was such a clear day, and found a fire on the backside of the house. What he was hearing was the crackling of the wood," said Ben Sharer, with United Fire Authority.

By the time fire crews arrived, the fire had spread to the attic. The blaze caused about $100,000 in damages.
