LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A search for a missing 77-year-old man came to a happy end when the man was found safe early Sunday morning.

Unified police said the missing man, Samuel Chung, was found in good condition at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Chong had been missing in the Red Pine Trail area since 11:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Unified police. Friends told police the man fell behind their hiking group and got lost.

Search and rescue teams as well as LifeFlight assisted in locating the man, and UPD said the search and rescue teams "refused to go home."

Crews were able to hike to where the man was and reached him by 2 a.m., said Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell. Despite being tired, Chung was able to walk down on his own. The group reached the parking lot by 3 a.m., Bell said. At that point, the man declined medical attention and just went home with his family, he said.
