LAREDO, Texas (AP) — Officials say eight people have been killed and some 40 injured in a charter bus crash in far South Texas. Webb County Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ricardo Rangel says the bus, identified as belonging to OGA Charters, originated in the Rio Grande Valley today and was headed to a casino in Eagle Pass, about 125 miles northwest of Laredo.
ATLANTA (AP) — A pilot is dead after his biplane crashed while performing a stunt at a metro Atlanta airshow. DeKalb County officials say the pilot crashed and died while flying in tandem with another plane during an aerial acrobatics stunt this afternoon at the Good Neighbor Day Open House Airshow at DeKalb Peachtree Airport, about 11 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
BAGHDAD (AP) — A local Iraqi official says at least six people were killed when more than a dozen suicide bombers attacked a residential and government complex in a town outside Baghdad on Saturday. Among the dead are five troops and one civilian. The number of militants who died isn't yet known. The town is located a few miles south of Fallujah, an Islamic State stronghold.
ROCKLIN, Calif. (AP) — A number of large retailers in California, including Safeway, Target, Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies, are reporting a surge in shoplifting. They say shoplifting has increased at least 15 percent since California voters reduced theft penalties 1½ years ago. But several experts say there's no proof that reduced criminal penalties led to the increase in shoplifting.
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The family of a seaman whose quick actions helped prevent the additional loss of life in the sinking of the Titanic is remembering him today at a gathering to unveil a headstone on his grave. Titanic enthusiasts joined members of the family of Robert Hopkins at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City, New Jersey, to unveil the black granite headstone bearing his name.
