DRAPER — A 3-year-old boy died Saturday night after being struck by an SUV in Draper. On Sunday, neighbors in the area are asking whether the death could have been avoided.

“I could see a little boy on the ground and they were doing CPR,” said Kris Burns, who witnessed the incident.

Draper Police say the toddler was walking with his family to their car when the boy darted into the road right in front of an SUV.

“There is no way she could have stopped in time, from the information we are gathering right now,” Draper Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter said.

A doctor in the neighborhood lead first aid efforts, which kept the boy alive until a medical helicopter arrived, but soon after, the child died of severe head trauma.

“I started bawling, everyone around was just so sad,” Burns said. “It's just so uncalled for and this is just such a busy road, too many people drive too fast along here. I'm hoping they will do something about it. I don't know they are planning to put a lot of other homes in over here.”

The road connects 11400 South to 13400 South, which means the road gets a lot of traffic. The side of the street where the boy was hit doesn't have a sidewalk.

“It is a tragedy that Draper has allowed a 35 mile-per-hour street out here,” said Bonney Thom, a neighbor. “If you look behind us at Lone Peak Parkway which runs parallel to I-15, that’s 35 miles per hour right off the interstate. So a little tiny lane right out here, where there are families, not to be at least 20-25 miles per hour is very irresponsible.”

Police reconstructed the scene to see if speed was a factor, though their preliminary investigation suggested the collision was an accident.

Friends of the 49-year-old driver who struck the child say she's inconsolable.

Police are still investigating the incident. No charges have been filed.
