DRAPER — A 3-year-old boy died Saturday evening after he reportedly ran into the road and was hit by a car.

Police say the boy was with his family visiting other family members in Draper after a baptism. About 7:30 p.m., as the family was walking to their vehicle, the boy ran into the road and was struck by an SUV near 11688 S. 700 West.

Responders found that the child had suffered "severe head trauma," and he was taken by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital, according to Draper Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter.

"Our officers arrived fairly quickly, as well as the paramedics," Carpenter said. "Any time something happens when it's a young child, especially a 3-year-old, that makes everyone of us think of our own children. So we go that much faster, that much harder to try and save this young person."

The boy died after being flown to the hospital, Carpenter said. The child's name was not released.

Police were still working to reconstruct the incident Saturday night, but the 49-year-old woman who was driving the SUV was not charged on the day of the incident. Carpenter said it appears the collision was an accident.

"There was no way that she could stop in time for the child," he said. "It was just one of those freak accidents that you never want to see happen, but they all too often do."

Carpenter said the boy and his family were not from the area but declined to say where they reside.
