BOUNTIFUL — A fire caused by a stovetop mishap destroyed a Bountiful apartment Tuesday and caused $100,000 in damage.
The fire was reported about 1 p.m. at the Springwood Apartments, 1230 S. 500 West, said South Davis Metro Fire Agency Chief Jeff Bassett. The most heavily damaged unit, where the fire ignited because of a cooking accident, was considered a complete loss, he said.
Woods Cross police arrived first to evacuate the building. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming out of a kitchen window and onto a nearby patio, Bassett said.
One woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital with nonserious injuries from smoke inhalation, Bassett said.
Four other apartments sustained significant smoke and water damage. Between eight and 12 people were temporarily displaced, but they will be accommodated by an insurance policy though the apartment complex, he said.
Unrelated basement fire
A second major fire in Bountiful ignited around 5 p.m., according to Bassett. That fire started in the basement of a home at 1400 S. 37 West and ended up causing about $80,000 in damage, he said.
A man and his four children were home at the time. The man tried to stomp out the fire, but it ignited a nearby recliner and continued to spread throughout the basement, Bassett said.
The basement of the home is considered a total loss. The main floor also sustained smoke damage.
The cause of the second fire was still being investigated Tuesday evening, Bassett said.
The affected family will be temporarily displaced from their home. The Red Cross was called out to accommodate them.
