OREM & OGDEN — It may be Leap Day, but March Madness has officially arrived.

Championship week for Class 4A and 5A high school boys basketball tipped off Monday with the UHSAA's Class 4A state tournament first round at the Dee Events Center in Ogden and and the UCCU Center in Orem.

And there was drama from the start.

In Orem, Kearns rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun East, 51-48.

Kearns guard Nick Valles was 2-of-9 from the 3-point line until he knocked down a 25-footer at the buzzer to give Kearns the win.

At almost the exact same moment in Ogden, Payson senior Jaden Terry hit a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left that gave Payson a 46-45 upset over Corner Canyon.

Other teams that posted first round upsets were Mountain View, Highland and Orem while title contenders Timpview, Olympus and Woods Cross each made a statement with double-digit wins.
