WASHINGTON (AP) — Abortion clinics in Louisiana want the Supreme Court to allow them to stay open and block a ruling that could leave just one of four clinics providing abortions. The clinics made an emergency appeal to the high court today. A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that a state law requiring doctors who provide abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals could be enforced even as the legal fight continues..
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says "let's pray that it can work for America" if Donald Trump becomes the GOP nominee. Carson said during an appearance today at a conference of religious broadcasters in Nashville that if Trump were to surround himself with the right advisers, "it might not be the total disaster that we anticipate."
BEIRUT (AP) — A cease-fire brokered by the United States and Russia is now in effect across Syria. It marks the biggest international push to reduce the country's violence. But the Islamic State group and al-Qaida's branch in Syria, the Nusra Front, have been excluded. The cease-fire aims to bring representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition back to the negotiating table.
HESSTON, Kan. (AP) — Authorities in Kansas say a woman has been charged with supplying a convicted felon with an assault rifle and a pistol. According to police, the felon, 38-year-old Cedric Ford, stormed into the factory where he worked and shot 14 people, killing three, before he was fatally shot Thursday. He'd just been served with a protective order involving a former girlfriend.
NEW YORK (AP) — Zika (ZEE'-kuh) infections are now confirmed in nine pregnant women in the United States. Health officials say one of the women gave birth to a baby with a rare birth defect. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say it's investigating 10 more reports of pregnant travelers with Zika. All got the virus while visiting or living in places with Zika outbreaks.
